student relationships

Building Relationships

Whether we are working with sixth graders at an environmental education camp, providing traditional instruction in a high school classroom, facilitating a permaculture workshop with a multigenerational group or guiding adults through the complex web of computer technology, our students can expect to receive high quality tutoring that is focused on the individual.  With more than 20 years experience working with students of all ages, education is about building relationships.  Every student must have a connection with their instructor before they are capable of learning a new topic.  The educational theorists Lev Vygotsky calls this moment the zone of proximal development, which is where personalized instruction can lead to the retention of knowledge.

Challenges of rural education

In a recent job interview, a potential employer asked me, "What do you see as the challenges rural communities face in providing a strong educational experience."

Computer Technology

It is easy to get frustrated when using a computer.  Having taught computers for more than 20 years, I have seen that there is an emotional barrier that many people have when they use a computer.

EspaƱol/Spanish Skills

Have you heard someone say, "I just don't have the talent to learn another language."  The truth is, anyone can learn a new language, all it takes is time.

Historical Research/Writing

Studying history should be fun!  Sure you might need to read a few pages, and write a few sentences, but History is a living subject that can be controversial, strange, and engaging.

Let students experience it!

Lecture.  Quiz.  Review.  Test.  Does this sound familiar?  If you were born before 1980, there is a good chance you have experienced this type of instructional methodology.

Reading/Writing Skills

As a former student who struggled with writing, Ryan Wilson has learned how to break down these skills in a way that gives students a new understanding of the skills.

Tutoring and Classes

We know education.  We have more than 50 years of educational experience in the classroom.  Over this time period, we have developed an understanding of how to communicate an idea and have a student be able to recall and retain the information.

When does learning stop?

Does the education system try to fit square pegs in round holes?  As a historian, I am often reminded about the origins of the education system.
